Mastering the mysteries of 3D printing, thanks to I2C
A group of Cheshire’s keenest innovators gathered together at Thornton Science Park earlier this month to learn all about 3D printing in a special masterclass provided by the ERDF-funded, University of Chester’s I2C (Innovation to Commercialisation) project.
With no prior expertise, or even basic knowledge of the technology, over two days the 11 budding entrepreneurs were taken through a step-by-step guide to 3D printing. They learned how an initial concept can be transformed into a physical design, thanks to the world of polymer additive manufacturing, or 3D printing as it’s more commonly known. Whether they are planning to manufacture haute couture accessories, bio-engineer replacement joints or to create components for vintage aircraft engines, the attendees discovered how they can harness the power of 3D printing technology to commercialise their innovative ideas.
John Morris from ‘The Airplane Collection’ an aviation preservation charity based at Hooton Park, said: “I knew very little about 3D printing before coming here but I’m so glad I came. I have learned so much over the last two days that will be a tremendous help to The Airplane Collection with its plans to restore historic aircraft and engines for static display. 3D printing will really come into its own for the work we do, particularly where the spare parts are obsolete or very expensive to source. There is also potentially a more commercial benefit, where we can create 3D parts to sell to other restoration groups to raise funds to continue our work.”
Paul Vernon, CEO at Thornton Science Park and project director of the 12C project, said: “Everyone attending our masterclasses is seeking practical, hands-on solutions to help them bring their particular product to market and create something commercially viable that their customers will want to buy. Like all of our skills-based masterclasses, this two day 3D printing session was very interactive with lots of practical demonstrations delivered by on-site experts, who showed how far this sophisticated technology has come and how it can be used in an extraordinary range of commercial applications.”
12C’s 3D printing masterclass was the latest in a series of two-day masterclasses provided by the 12C project to promote design and innovation across the Cheshire and Warrington area. The masterclasses are open to all those businesses who are registered to the ERDF-funded 12C project.
