SMEs in Cheshire and Warrington already seeing results from business mentoring programme

Business Support News

Be the Business’s Mentoring for Growth programme has established 24 mentoring relationships for SMEs in Cheshire and Warrington with blue-chip companies since it launched in July.

Mentoring for Growth is Be the Business’s flagship programme and is designed to connect business leaders from large, multi-national companies with key decision makers and owners from SME organisations. The connection facilitates knowledge transfer, exchange of ideas, expertise and experience to shape the future direction of an SME and deliver an exciting step-change in business productivity.

One of the businesses involved in the programme is Warrington-based engineering firm Bmech Group. Rob Ditchfield, MD at Bmech Group said “Since taking over from my father when he retired, there has been 9 years of fast growth within our business. During this time I have always found mentors to be a huge asset to myself, both for business decisions and to gain experience . The process of initially discussing where my strengths and weaknesses are as a leader has allowed Mentoring for Growth to partner me with a very successful, vice president of a major corporation. We have spoken on the phone and are due to meet in the next few weeks which I know will be a positive experience. The process from application to being assigned a mentor has been effortless and I would highly recommend it to anyone considering applying.

Supporting the programme locally is the Cheshire and Warrington Growth Hub who provide business support to businesses across the sub-region. The Growth Hub helps to identify SMEs who could benefit from the programme. Andy Devaney, Director of Business Innovation at Cheshire and Warrington LEP, said “This programme gives our businesses a unique opportunity to be matched with some of the leading companies in the UK and their leaders. Accessing this expertise and support can really help businesses like Bmech to gain an external perspective on growth and innovation plans, as well develop an individual leader.”

Be the Business is the business-led organisation created to close the UK’s productivity gap. Led by Sir Charlie Mayfield, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, Be the Business is spearheading a business-led drive to help companies across the UK improve their performance. Mentoring for Growth matches leaders of SMEs with mentors from some of England’s leading and most productive companies including GSK, Amazon and The John Lewis Partnership.
