‘Suite’ smell of success for Portal Business Centres

 Warrington and Wirral-based centre leaders ‘to let’ Growth Hub support their future expansion plans

Providing serviced office space, meeting rooms and virtual offices for small and medium sized businesses and budding entrepreneurs allows the 13-strong Portal Business Centres team the opportunity to see at first hand just how vibrant the regional business scene is.

“The north west corridor of Cheshire is home to some fantastic entrepreneurs and small businesses who are aiming to achieve some amazing things,” said the firm’s owner and managing director Sallie Maskrey. “It’s quite something to see this at first hand, and it’s rewarding to all of us to be able to help many of these businesses get on their feet.”

Some 50 clients are currently based in the family-owned company’s two north west sites – one in Warrington and another in the Wirral. But Sallie and the team want to focus on “location, location, location”, by expanding with a third site and delivering a five-year growth plan aimed at increasing turnover by 30 per cent and creating at least seven new jobs.

“We have a new site near Ellesmere Port that we’re all incredibly excited about, but launching something like this from scratch can bring plenty of challenges,” Sallie added. “As well as employing and training a number of new people, we have to go out and market the site in a new areas and a completely new set of potential clients.

“Although we thrive on situations like this, we are also open-minded enough to know that supportive organisations, like the Cheshire and Warrington Growth Hub, are out there to help us achieve our goals.”

With Growth Hub support and funding, the Portal Business Centres team is developing a bespoke sales and marketing strategy for the new site, including a digital sales programme directly linked to new CRM and internal communications systems. They are also benefitting from training support and coaching linked to the new systems.

“We needed someone to support us on our journey, which is important for us all, and we’re delighted the Growth Hub could help,” Sallie said. “With their support – and using their comprehensive supplier selection process – we were able to rank 12 tenders against each other to get the best supplier at the best price. Add to this the £4,000 worth of grant funding for the project and it really is a win, win.”

Following the supplier selection process, Sallie and her team have been able to select a supplier that best meets their needs – and work has already begun to get the systems in place to make sure the new site launches with a bang.

“The Growth Hub’s support has given us additional help in selecting and defining the suppliers that we were potentially going to be working with,” Sallie added. “And I’m confident we’ve got the right supplier for us.”


Now the foundations are in place, Sallie and the team at Portal Business Centres are focusing on growth, “By 2018, we want to have created seven new jobs and increased our turnover by 30 per cent. It’s ambitious but the new site is in a great location so we’re confident it’s achievable,” she concluded.
