Stay Ahead

British Business Bank

What does it do?

For established businesses, access to finance can mean the difference between staying ahead – either through expansion or getting day-to-day working capital – and falling behind.
The BBB increases choice of both product and provider for smaller businesses through investing alongside or providing guarantees to our partners.
Businesses looking to achieve particularly rapid growth, especially through equity finance, may wish to consider some of the SCALE UP partners listed.
Stay Ahead Programmes include:

Investment Programme – supports non-bank and challenger bank lenders in order to increase the supply of finance and the diversity in the financial marketplace for smaller businesses.
Enable Guarantees – Enables participating bank originators to share a portion of the credit risk of a newly originated small business lending portfolio with HM Government in return for a fee.
Enable Funding – provides cheap funding to small lease finance providers. BBB buys up leases from small lease finance providers without taking on the majority of the underlying risk. The providers can issue more leases with the cash they get. BBB will bundle together all the receivables from finance providers and sell this as a bond in the capital markets, using proceeds of this bond to start the process again.
Enterprise Finance Guarantee – helps SMEs that have a viable proposal but lack sufficient security to access bank finance. Provides a partial guarantee to the lender, effectively sharing a portion of the risk.

What will the benefits be for me?
The British Business Bank works with over 80 finance partners to unlock finance for smaller businesses.
STAY AHEAD partners participate in programmes designed to increase choice and volume of debt finance and alternative finance, such as the Enterprise Finance Guarantee and the commercial arm’s Investment Programmes.
The process selects partners by their participation in British Business Bank’s programmes. They may also provide finance independently from those programmes – please check with each finance provider.
As well as British Business Bank partners, there are many other alternatives in the market – the website gives a link to a Business Finance Guide to allow you to explore these option.
